There are around 20 species in this order, all found in one family. They are found from the southern United States south through South America. Armadillos are insectivores or herbivores. Armadillos have scaly plates called scutes that cover their heads, bodies, and tails. Armadillos have long tails; small eyes; and short, powerful clawed feet. Most species have large, rabbit-like ears. Some species have long, pointed snouts and other species have short snouts. Some species can curl up into a ball when they are threatened! Armadillos use their claws to dig in the dirt and eat insects, grubs, carrion, small vertebrates, and plants. Most species are solitary and live in burrows. Armadillos are excellent swimmers.
