Coliiformes - Mousebirds

Classification

 Phylum: Chordata
 Class: Aves
 Order: Coliiformes

Speckled MousebirdThere is only one family, Coliidae, in this order. It includes six species of mousebirds: the red-backed mousebird, the white-backed mousebird, the white-headed mousebird, the speckled mousebird, the red-faced mousebird, and the blue-naped mousebird.

Mousebirds are found in Sub-Saharan Africa. They are small gray birds, no more than 14 inches in length, with long, thin tails; stubby bills; and crests on their heads. They get their name from the way they scurry along like mice! They eat berries, fruits, and buds. They have very strong claws and can hang upside down while feeding. Mousebirds are very social and often gather in groups. Mousebirds are also known as colies.
