This family of birds includes 120 species. They small to medium in size and live in wetlands, usually in thick vegetation near lakes, marshes, swamps or rivers.
They have long toes that help them more around on mud and vegetation. They have short, rounded wings and plump bodies with short tails. Males and females are usually alike.
