There is one species in this family. Unlike most rays, the sixgill stingray has six pairs of gill slits instead of the usual five. It has two spines on its long tail; a long, pointed snout, and rounded pectoral fins. It is found in ocean waters from
South Africa eastward to Japan, Australia, and Hawaii.
